The book thus functions as a grid, intersecting these two organizational approaches, exploring gray areas, slippages and overlaps between systems. Downtown Arts Project, Emerge: Sue de Beer catalogue 2005 Whitney Museum, Banks Violette exhibition catalogue 2005 Whitney Museum of American Art, Tim Hawkinson exhibition catalogue 2005
The catalogue for the Tim Hawkinson exhibition at the Whitney Museum. Taking cues from the artist's transformation of everyday materials, the book is wrapped in ordinary brown packing paper with the cover typography embossed on one side and debossed on the other lending the impression that the type was pushed through a solid form. The interior typography utilized a mechanical typewriter typeface in a single setting with each different section composed on its own grid. Whitney Museum of American Art, Biennial exhibition catalogue 2004
An identity system and catalogue for the premier exhibition of new American art. The catalogue included a book and a box of artwork by the 107 selected artists. Each artist chose one of eight predetermined formatsÑrectangular poster, square poster, 'zine, round sticker, bumper sticker, uncoated square card, glossy postcard, or filmstripÑto create an original piece. To complement this eclectic collection, the book also reflected a kind of controlled chaos: the curators' essays were designed with a limited array of typefaces within a strict grid system while commissioned and reprinted texts broke out of those constraints, reflecting their diverse origins. Ji's technique draws from traditional Chinese painting but directly addresses contemporary issues. This series criticizes the controversial Three Gorges Dam and depicts the horrors of effect from flooding the Pearl River Delta region. All of the text in the book is set in dense lines and falls below a mid-page horizon to reinforce a sinking sensation; the only content that creeps above that horizon is Ji's artwork. Special gatefolds are incorporated to accomodate his long scroll paintings. During 1996-97, Harvard Graduate School of Design's Project on the City students focused on China's Pearl River Delta, a cluster of five cities undergoing a rapid and unrestricted capitalist development producing an entirely new urban substance. The book presents thesis essays which explore the problematic results of this forced modernization with a focus on five areas: ideology, landscape, architecture, money, and infrastructure. Because of the many and varied forms the collected research and documentation took on, the resulting 800-page book was designed to be a sort of annotated atlas, dense with maps, information graphs, writing, reflections, photographs, and anecdotes. signage Building China exhibition, Center for Architecture 2008

Pacific Northwest College of Art Gala 2009
A save-the-date, invitation, program, and event materials for the Black Tie Birthday Bash benefit for Pacific Northwest College of Art's Centennial Gala. Materials and production methods create a spectrum of refinement vs. roughness: foil stamping on chipboard, silkscreening on newsprint. Riverkeeper Fishermen's Ball 2009 Whitney Gala 2008
An invitation package for the 2008 Whitney Gala. The theme of Past Present Future was applied to the invite and auction brochure, as well as a special invitation to a private dinner celebrating the event. The print materials and production techniques employed emphasize the concept of reflecting on the past, thinking about the present, and looking forward to the future: high-gloss laminates, foils, and stocks suggest mirrors, brushed steel, marble, and transparent glass. The partially mirrored typography hints at the theme, while creating a distinctive, yet restrained, branding based on the Whitney's custom typeface.
